A well-known Maori chief, Mr Henare Kaihau, died at his residence at Pukekohe last evening at the age of 65 years. Heart failure, supervening upon an attack of influenza, was the cause of death. The Auckland District Racing Committee has fixed 18th December as the date for the Waipa Racing CluVs racing fixture at Te Awamutu. A Press Association message received to-day states that E. H. Penny, who was injured in a motor smash at Palmerston, has succumbed to his injuries. A terrible tragedy occurred atOtaki on Thursday evening, when, after a heated argument with his nineteen-year-old daughter abput the possession of a letter, a widower named McFall seized a sharp instrument, presumably a hat pin, and thrust it at the girl, piercing a vital spot, and causing instant death. Then, horrified at his deed, the father seized a razor and cut his throat. Infectious germs which lodge in the mucous of the mouth and throat are destroyed by Sharland’s Formalin Throat Tablets (Mint or Cinnamon Flavour). Sold everywhere, 2/. *5 Mr W. A. Gray, M.C., M.Sc., mem. Inst. C.E., visited Te Awamutu to-day. Mr Gray, who has just returned from the front, is in practice in Auckland as a civil engineer. He was well known in football circles before the war, and as a member of the Auckland Rugby Union he this morning interviewed the Mayor and other prominent men in the town, and will proceed this afternoon to Otorohanga. Mr Gray, after wounds received in action, and after repatriation from a German war -hospital, spent some considerable time in studying the drainage and water supply schemes in the principal towns in the British Isles, and gained a fine experience. He will return to Auckland on Tuesday.
