DISTRICT NEWS.

KIHIKIHI.

(Own Correspondent),

The official opening of the new tennis courts took place on Wednesday when there was a large attendance of visiting players and others. The courts are in splendid order and reflect great credit on the tennis enthusiasts throughout the district, those who have so generously subscribed and those who have been instrumental in getting the money in.

The president Mr J. G. Elmsly, in declaring the season open, said that during his residence at Kihikihi three attempts at forming a tennis club had been made, all of which had fallen through, but this, the fourth, was the best of all, and he wished them a successful season. Mr Elmsly then played the first ball over the net, and declared the courts open. Afternoon tea was dispensed b}' the ladies, and greatly appreciated.

The children attending the Kihikihi school have subscribed £3 12s towards the relief of distressed Belgian refugees. It is with the greatest regret that we have to announce the death of Mrs Tom Maunder, who passed peacefully away at her residence on Wednesday. Out of respect the .dance in connection with the tennis club was postponed.
