At a meeting of the Waikato Liberal and Progressive Association held at Hamilton on Monday Mr E. Gallichan, general secretary for New Zealand, presided. After formal business had been transacted, the question of selection of a candidate was dealt with. Through the various branches in the electorate the names of Messrs Foster, Lafferty, Scholes, and Murphy were sent forward for consideration. After the matter had been thoroughly discussed, Mr Lafferty in a very complimentary speech to Mr Scholes asked permission to be allowed to withdraw his name, which permission was granted him. Messrs Murphy and Foster followed Mr Lafferty's example, the three gentlemen pointing out that Mr Scholes, being a prominent farmer and a well-known man, would undoubtedly be a very strong candidate. After the meeting had expressed its appreciation of the action of the three gentlemen named, Mr Scholes was unanimously elected as the candidate. A very large deputation from the meeting proceeded to Frankton Junction, and interviewed Sir Joseph Ward, who was passing through, and informed him of the decision arrived at.
Sir Joseph expressed his appreciation to those gentlemen, who retired and heartily congratulated Mr Scholes, and with much pleasure endorsed his candidature.
