BAND PICNIC.
A meeting of the committee of the Te Awamutu Town Band was held last night at the office of the WAIPA POST, Mr F. D; Wood presiding. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed and the correspondence dealt with, the chairman explained that the meeting had been called for the consideration of arrangements in connection with the picnic and illuminated concert to be held at Victoria Park on Labour Day. Mr Wood reported having interviewed the members of the croquet club, and that all had been anxious to assist the band. They had given full consideration to the proposal and thought they could do better justice to the occasion by holding a tournament that day rather than by opening the season as was suggested. The ladies had expressed a keen desire to assist in making this picnic a success and to that end they had pledged themselves. Appreciation was expressed by the action of the Croquet club and record made accordingly. Mr Fortescue reported having waited upon the tennis club. A desire has also been expressed at the members to assist the band, but the question had been raised
as to the charge for admission to the grounds for the club’s visitors and guests in the event of either the officiai opening or a special tournament being held. It was considered that the date would be rather late in the season for the official opening day, but no doubt a tournament would take place. He had since learned that the club had arranged for a tournament which indicated that the band would have the tennis club’s support. The club was thanked for the support, and it was agreed unanimously that such arrangements concerning any visitors be made within the respective clubs, as will be to mutual advantage. The delegates reported that the Bowling Club had not yet met although it was considered that That club would also give ready assistance. It was resolved that the band assemble at the Post Office at 10 a.m.j and that a fancy dress parade be held. On arrival at the park at about 10.20 a.m., the various competitions and games will be immediately enteieJ upon. The main part of the evening was devoted to the consideration of the programme. Full particulars of which will be issued at an early date. During the day the band will play several selections and give exhibitions of Quick Step, Sparrow Marches, and Counter Marches. The Secretary was instructed to interview local firms with a view to arranging for various booths on the grounds. The public will provide their own catering arrangements, but hot water and milk will be provided free. In the evening an illuminated concert will be held at the park, and arrangements to that end were considered. —Mr J. Rule undertook to attend to all arrangements in connection therewith and full particulars will be issued later. The programme will take the form of a band and minstrel entertainment, and at the conclusion of the musical items a dance will be held on the greens. It was resolved that the charge for the picnic be, adults is, children under thirteen 6d, and children under five years free. In the evening the charges will be the same. The tickets, which will be issued early, will be attachable to the coat of those attending.
The meeting adjourned until October I2th, when further arrangements will be made.
