TE AWAMUTU TOWN BAND.
CONTEST POSTPONED. A meeting of the committee of the Te Awamutu Town Band was held at the WAIPA POST office last night, there being present — Messrs. J. Jackson (president), F. D. Wood, J. Rule, S. J. Fortescue, H. Meyer, A. Newsome, J. T. North, A. Bygrave, and A. G. Warburton. The minutes were duly read and confirmed, and outward correspondence approved. In reply to a circular letter issued, several of the entered bands wrote urging that the contest be postponed from October 26th. In doing so they pointed out that several of their playing members had joined the Expeditionary Force, and that their playing strength was consequently weakened. The Bandmaster reported that two members of the Te Awamutu band had joined the Te Awamutu troop to the force and that other bandsmen were holding themselves in readiness to leave at .any moment.
The secretary reported upon the expenditure incurred to date in completing preliminary arrangements for the holding of the contest and carnival on October 26th, After some discussion it was unanimously resolved that in view of the circumstances the contest and carnival be postponed until a date to be decided later.
Messrs Chas. Begg and Co. wrote offering to donate a silver mounted baton to the bandmaster of the band winning the Hawke Challenge Shield. The offer was accepted with thanks. The secretary reported that Mr H. A. Luks had offered to donate a medal for one of the solo items. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Luks for his gift. It was resolved that a band picnic be held at Victoriu Park on Labour Day, and that the bowling, tennis, and croquet clubs be asked to officially open the season on that day and act in. conjunction with the band. Messrs Wood and Fortescue were deputed to interview the committees of the respective clubs.
Some discussion ensued as to the form the picnic will take, but the drawing up of a programme was deferred until a subsequent meeting. In arranging this picnicthe members of the band do so in the desire that it will be able to meet the expenditure which has been incurred in so far promoting the contest and carnival, so that the band may be financially in a position to reenter into negotiations for the arranging of the contest immediately conditions become normal again. It was resolved that an open-air concert be held at Victoria Park in the evening of October 26th, Mr Rule kindly undertaking to promote the contest. The band to assemble in the early part of the evening, attired in fancy dress, and march through the town to the park.
