HINDOO COOLIES.
When replying to a question at the local Town Hall on Thursday evening Mr J. A. Young, member for the district, made brief reference to a question he had asked in the House on September iotli of last year. In accordance with his request, made at the meeting, we publish this question and the reply thereto as appears in Hansard, vol. 164, page 553 • Mr Young (Waikato) asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will enter into immediate negotiations, through the Imperial authorities, with the Government of the Crown Colony of Fiji with a view to seeing if it would not be possible to compel those persons and corporations whoffiave been responsible for the importation of Hindoo coolies into the islands under the authority of the Fijian Government to return them to India at the completion of their labour contracts, so as to check in some measure, if not altogether abolish, the migration of coolies from Fiji to New Zealand ?
The Hon. Mr Massey (Prime Minister) replied. A Bill to amend the Immigration Restriction Act is at present in preparation, and by its provisions it is intended to restrict, as far as possible, the immigration of Hindoo coolies to this country. The matter was brought under notice of the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies during his recent visit to New Zealand.
