PATERANGI6, v. PIRONGIA 1
The above teams met at Paterangi on Wednesday afternoon. The weather conditions were ideal for hockey, and a good fast game was witnessed. The match was played with the utmost good feeling on both sides. Paterangi proved too good for their opponents, whom they defeated by by 6 goals to I, but it is only fair to state that Pirongia were greatly handicapped with having to play a man short. They lacked the combination displayed by the Paterangi team, and who, no doubt, will prove a hard team to beat. The opening saw Pirongia rushing down into Paterangi's territory, but an infringement at a critical moment lost them a good chance. The blues immediately turned defence into attack, and away they went Sylvester being prominent.' Pirongia had to concede a corner, but N. Fear relieved, and play was transferred to Paterangi's end of the .field, but this was not for long, and from a good passing rush K. Johnstone essayed a shot, the ball rising over the net. Paterangi continued to press, but Pirongia were playing a good defensive game, Owen saving in good style. The next few minutes saw some good play on the part of Gordon, K. Johnstone, and Weal, the latter finishing by shooting a well timed goal. From the bully-off Pirongia set off for their opponents' circle, N. Fear in the lead. Hard hitting spoilt the effort. Off-side play at this stage was responsible for Paterangi being penalised, Pirongia came away with a good rush. Paterangi backs, proved safe. Pirongia had the of things for awhile, but " bad shooting spoilt several good chances. At this stage the Pirongia backs were put on the defensive, Owen being prominent with some good blocking. Continuing to press, the ball was sent on to Webb, who scored. Pirongia retaliated, and were unfortunate in not being able to score. Half-time was called without further score. Paterangi 2, Pirongia 0. This spell had no sooner started when Pirongia invaded their opponents' territory, and an improvement was noticeable in their play. They, however, lacked the finishing touches as they repeatedly got within striking distance. A good pass by Fear to Macky gave the latter a splendid chance. He, however, hesitated too long, and a splendid opportunity was lost. Paterangi got in motion again. The fine defence of Finn (goalkeeper) kept them at bay. K. Johnstone was at last given a good pass, and he found the net with a good shot. A similar chance was given him a few seconds later, the ball striking the post. Both teams were visibly tiring. C. Webb from a good passing rush, managed to add a further goal for his side. Paterangi continued to attack, and two corners failed to relieve the pressure. From a tussle in front of the goal A. Weal found the net. Just before call of time, Pirongia removed play to Paterangi's circle, and N. Fear accepting a pass shot the first and only goal for his side. Paterangi's score was increased by R. Gordon notching a goal. The game ended, Paterangi 6, Pirongia I.
Mr C. Davis had charge of the game, and his decisions met with the approval of both teams. At the conclusion of the match afternoon tea was supplied by the ladies, which proved very welcome to players and spectators alike.
The match between Ohaupo and Rovers was played at Ohaupo on Wednesday, and a very close and exciting game resulted in a drawn game. Mr E. Parker had charge of the whistle, and gave satisfaction.
