The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY TUESDAY, MAY 19, 1914. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr F. H. Vile calls attention in a replace advertisement to the large stock of horse and cow covers that he has on hand.

Messrs House and Daking call attention to the latest styles in dress goods on view at their premises. A perusal of the firm's business announcement in this issue is recommended.

The football, match, Cambridge v. United, which was to haye taken place at Bockett's paddock on Saturday last, did not materialise, the Cambridge team failing to put in an appearance.

There are forty-two applications for eleven five-acre sections at Solway, near Maoterton, which have been acquired' for rural workers' dwellings. The Government will erect dwellings from plans selected by the successful applicants. Residents throughout the district will learn with regret of the rather serious indisposition of Mr J. Pollard, sen., who was taken suddenly ill on Friday evening. Medical aid was immediately summoned and we learn from Dr Hall this morning that* there is a slight though very slight —improvement in the health of the sufferer.

At about 10.30 this morning a long funeral procession proceeding to the railway station, passed through Te Awamutu. The native followers, or most of them, were proceeding to Taupiri, where the interment of one of King Mahuta's nieces, who died at Parawera recently, is to take place. The natives had, as far as possible, adopted European customs, the body being conveyed to the railway in Finlay Bros', hearse.

The delegates of the various clubs and institutions appointed to attend the meeting convened by the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce, at which a scheme for the utilisation of Albert Park for general recreation purposes is to be prepared, are reminded that this meeting takes place at the Cosmopolitan club room on Thursday evening next. As practically every club and institution will be represented at that meeting, there can.be but little doubt that proppsals which will tend to the promotion of all sports and pastimes as well as adding to the value of one of the district's playgrounds, will go forward. The result of the meeting will be awaited with interes't.

Knowing that poaching was going on even before the shooting season opened, we have obtained, for the information of our readers, a list of the names of persons to whom licenses to kill imported game (other than deer) have been issued at Te Awamutu. This list reads: Messrs P. H. Bourne, J. G. B. Gifford, P. J. Laurie, Jas. Lawrenson, Jas. Oliphanr, E. B. Walker, and B. C. Wheeler. It is a surprisingly small list, although, if hearsay evidence counts for anything, a great many more sports (?) are taking full advantage of the open season. The wanton destruction of game by persons not legally entitled to do so, will seriously injure the district from \ a sportsman's point of view, and in order that residents may have the information which will enable them to bring the poacher to book we will, from time to time, publish any additions to the list. Nobody can have any respect for the poacher who invariably classes himself as a good sport. The vigilance of all residents, a few convictions, and a little publicity, will possibly have IV dosired effect of freeing this ..I i<.ct from his dastardly tactics.

Tenders are invited by the Te Awamutu Town Board for formation work on Park Road. Tenders close Friday next. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. John's Church is called for Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock, when a full attendance is requested. At the meeting of the New Zealand Sports Protection League held last evening, Mr W. G. Abbott, ofOhaupo, was appointed secretary, Mr J. M. Spear having resigned owing to pressure of business.

The following will represent the Rovers in the hockey match against Ohaupo. at Ohaupo, tomorrow afternoon : Backs : Warner, F. North, Douglas (captain), Duncan, Solomon y forwards : F. Harrison, Finch, L. Davis, G. Taylor, L. G. North. The marriage took place at Wellington on 12th inst, of Mr A. J. (Jack) McGovern, third son of Mr F. McGovern, of Te Awamutu, to Miss Famer, of Wellington. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Hirley, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends of the young couple. Mr F. L. Kendrick, of the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, has been temporarily transferred to Te Awamutu'to take over control of the local branch, Mr.W. Cook, relieving manager, having handed over to him yesterday. Mr Kendrick will remain at Te Awamutu until a permanent appointment is made.

A meeting of the Croquet Club was held on Saturday afternoon. It was then decided to close the lawn as soon as the final round for the Mrs Collins' trophy was played off: given fine weather for a few days this should not take long. After, the necessary work of weeding and clearing will be undertaken, and for this purpose funds are urgently needed. It was decided that each playing member be asked to contribute ss. It is hoped that the members will respond readily, at their convenience. The secretary acknowledges the receipt of six of these subscriptions. We learn from Pirongia this morning that an important stage in connection with the water works system will be reached today by the connecting up of the line of pipes from the headworks, at that spot where the private contract commenced. When this is completed it will be possible for the water to be turned on,' although it is not likely to be until the reticulation in the town is completed. The construction of the reservoir is not completed, but, under ordinary circumstances it should be ready for use in a tew weeks' time. In the meantime the supply could be drawn direct from the intake.
