HOCKEY.
On Wednesday afternoon tne members of the Te Awamutu Ladies' Hockey. Club opened the season at Bockett's paddock with a seven a-side tournament. There was a fair attendance of the public, the afternoon being fine. The ground was in splendid-order for playing. The following teams took part:—
A team—Mrs Bathurst, Misses R. Verner, D. Hutt, H. Merryweather, A. McCutcheon (captain) Best, and Olphert.
B team—Misses E. O'Brien; V. Hutt, H. Heerdescn, D. Thomas, B. Verner, F. Rickit (captain), and Winch.
Both teams were very evenly matched, and, considering it was their first game this season, the form shown was good. The club has secured several new players, and, judging by the manner in which they handled the "stick," should prove valuable additions to the club. Two short spells were played, and the game ended in a win for the A team by two goals (scored by Miss A. McCutcheon) to nil. To add to the afternoon's enjoyment a match was arranged to take place with a team from the men's club, the members,of a the sterner sex playing in faiicy costume. Prior to taking the field a photograph was taken of "the boys." The make-up of several* of the players caused a deal ofX amused comment, especially that of "Mrs Pankhurst" and "The = Siamese Twins " from " Ivanhoe." During the progress of the game the antics of the players, especi- - ally "Mrs Pankhurst," kept the--spectators in a state of merriment,'/ although some of the playerstook a rather serious view OtttieC game. The result was an easy win for the ladies. Mr C. Davis controlled the game, giving every satisfaction.
