TE AWAMUTU TOWN BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the above Board took place in Bo'ckett’s buildings on Fiiday afternoon. Present: Messrs A. S. Wallace (chairman), S. Mathews, W. Taylor, and Dr Reekie. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. SPECIAL MEETING. On the motion of the chairman it was agreed that a special meeting be held to consider the proposed town boundaries, and also the matter of the new town hall. THANKS. On the motion of Mr Mathews, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Dr Reekie for placing his motor-car at the Board’s disposal. Seconded by Mr Taylor and carried. Mr James Spear was also accorded a vote of thanks for his kind offer to meet any trains and drive Ministers of the Crown into the township when visiting Te Awamutu. OUTWARD CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence was read and approved. SALE OF PROPERTY. Mr E. A. Cox, solicitor, notified the Board of the sale of section 114, from R. G. Blennerhassett to A. Baxter. The clerk was instructed to forward same to the Valuation Department.

FOOTPATHS. The need of a footpath on College Hill was urged by Dr Reekie. The matter was held over pending a report by the engineer. DOMAIN LEASES. It was reported that the lessees in many cases were not complying with the conditions set out in the lehse. Dr Reekie moved that the clerk be instructed to inform lessees of their non-compliance with the agreement, also pointingout the penalty in such cases. ' TRANSFER OF LICENSE. A letter was read from the Campbell and Ehrenfried Co., Ltd., enclosing cheque for £2 Os 6d, being local fee £2 plus exchange, in connection with transfer of license of Te Awamutu Hotel from Mr D. Norden to Mr J. Jackson. ARCHITECT. Mr R. P. de Ridder wrote asking if the Town Board and Town Clerk intend to pass by the town architect for an outsider without justification for it, in the matter of the proposed new Town Hall. He thought his 37 years’ experience of best work, highest honours and successes in public and other competitions with thebest English architects, besides the smaller work done in this township, should not be ignored when a modern good and creditable building is as necessary as the experience and ability to design and carry it out. —On the motion of Dr Reekie it was decided that the clerk inform Mr de Ridder that the Board, although they have opened the matter of a new To.wn Hall, were not committed to Mr Warren or to any other architect in any way whatever. '

TOWN CLOCK. The Prime Minister, PostmasterGeneral, and Minister of Public Works wrote, through Mr J. A. Young, M.R, acknowledging, the invitation to be presented! the official opening of the post office buildings and clock tower.—-Mr Mathews moved that the date of the official opening be left until such time as the Ministers find it convenient to attend. Seconded by Dr Reekie. PUNIU BRIDGE. The district engineer ,Public - Works Department made application for the balance of the Board’s contribution (£12315s iod) which was considerably overdue. The clerk was instructed to attend to the matter. LIGHTING.

J. W. Blackman wrote enclosing a statement of his account and asking for payment.—Clerk to attend to matter. LIGHTING THE TOWN CLOCK.

R. S. W. Murray wrote stating that the estimate given by the local representative of the New Zealand Acetylene Lighting Co. (£29), was quite inadequate, and stated that the cost of maintenance .did not enter into the calculations. It would cost the Board quite £1 a' week to maintain, that is 16-so candle-power burners, running from 5 p.m. to 12 p.m.—lt was decided that the matter of lighting the tower be held over pending a decision on the town lighting question.

TEASDALE SETTLEMENT. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote stating that on receipt of the voucher for £305 9s 6d in connection with Teasdale footpaths, the amount would be paid direct to the Bank of New Zealand, Te Awamutu. FINES. Treasury notified the board of payment having been paid to the board’s credit of £2 lOs on account of fines against persons for breach of the town by-laws collected at the Magistrate’s Court. FINANCE. The clerk reported that the general account was overdrawn £787 18s 9d; saleyards account credit £4O 4s sd; u ater supply account credit £IB4O 9s 2d. DRAINAGE WORKS. Messrs John Burns and Co., wrote stating that they would be pleased to send illustrations and quotations for the supply of smoke-testing machines for

drainage works. —Engineer to report.

LOCAL BODIES’ LOANS,

Mr J.- A. Young; M.P., forwarded a copy of the Act to consolidate certain enactments relating to local bodies loans. ACCOUNTS.

The following accounts were v passed for payment: —Waterworks account (wages) £lO6 I2s sd; WAIPA Post £7 6s 6d ; Ross and Co., £7 6s gd ; G: Paul 12s 6d; C. T. Rickit £32 9s lod; G. Moon and Co., £3 12s. The meeting adjourned till 9 a.m., on Saturday. ADJOURNED MEETING. The adjourned meeting of the Awamutu Town Board was held on Saturday at Bockett’s j Building. All the members were present. Mr A. S. Wallace presided. The board’s engineer, Mr H. Munro Wilson, was also present. COLLEGE STREET. Plans of the formation and grading of College Street were submitted by the engineer. 1 his matter was held over in the meantime. PIPES. The engineer submitted prices of Sin pipes, which were required for the reservoir, and asked for authority to procure same. —Granted. T On.the advice of the engineer it was resolved that tenders be called for the cartage of pipes to the headworks at once. It was also resolved that tenders be called for cast-iron specials and fittings, etc., for the reservoir. ALEXANDRA STREET. Plans were submitted by the engineer for the formation and grading of Alexandra Street. On the motion of Dr Reekie it was resolved that tenders be called for the work. Seconded by Mr Mathews. METAL. The chairman moved that the clerk write and obtain quotations for spawls and gravel. SEWERAGE.

The engineer stated that he would have, the plans for the sewerage system completed for 4 the next meeting of the board.
