On Friday last an inquest was held on the body of Mrs Emily Powell, who died suddenly at the Star Hotel the previous day, Mr J. G. Elmsly, T.P., acting as coroner, and the inquest was conducted by Constable Wade, Mrs Thomson, who was present when Mrs Powell was taken ill, stated that deceased complained of feeling tired and said she would go and rest. The deceased ladv went to the stair-case, when witness decided to go with her up the stairs. When the first landing was reached deceased seemed to lose the use of her legs and practically collapsed. Assistance was immediately forthcoming and deceased was taken to her room when she expired immediately. Dr Hall, who was called in, had examined the body and from the symptoms described to him and the appearance of the body, he was satisfied that deceased died from heart disease. The jury, of whom Mr Brown was chosen foreman, returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.
There was a large attendance at the social evening held in the Town Hall on Friday night last in connectifin with the Presbyterian Church. Games and competitions were indulged in by the young people with merry zest and supper was provided by the ladies. During the evening Mr. J. M. Stewart on behalf of the congregation presented to Miss Cullen a silver-mounted dressing case and manicure set in token of the appreciation of which she is held as organist of the church. Mr Geo. McGhie suitably responded for Miss Cullen.
The following lady_ hockey players will meet the Te Awamutu ladies at Te Awamutu on Wednesday next in a 7 a side tournament: Misses B. Anderson, E. O’Brien, L. Sutherland, W. Henricksen, Verner (3).
