PIRONGIA.

The weather conditions were all that could be expected for the scouts’ competition for the Miller Shield and Challenge Cup, which took place at Pirongia on Friday last. When the shield was first competed for in Te Awamutu by the C Squadron, 4th Regiment Waikato Mounted Rifles, it was won by Private W. Sim, of Pirongia. The second year it was won by Trooper F. Holmes, and the third year by Trooper T. B. Holmes. This year it has again been won by Trooper F. Holmes. The following are the scores : Private F. Holmes 104 points, Private McConkev 86. Private Budden 86, Private P. B. Holmes 84, Sergeant J. Holmes 83, Private Medway 80, Private Alexander 79, Private Milligan 74, Private Kirkham 74, Corporal Meyer 73, Corporal Anderson 72, Private Cullen 68, Private Rice 66, Private Cavenny 45. A gold medal is presented each year by Mrs Miller to the winner of the shield.

At the same time the Challenge Cup presented by Miss E. J. Miller, of Pirongia, was shot for, the conditions being five shots and a sighter each at 300 yds and 500 yds. This is a handicap, and was first,shot for in 1911, when it was won by Private B. Symes ; the next year it was won by Corporal B. Sim, and this year the winner turned up in Sergeant J. Plolmes, who won from scratch with a score of 39 out of a possible 50. Following are the handicaps and .scores : Sergeant Major Hall, scr, 14 at 300yds, 4 at 525, total 18; Sergeant Holmes, 17, 22, 39 : Sergeant McConkey, scr, 17, 10, 27; Corporal Meyer, scr, 10,2, 12 ; Private F. Holmes, scr, 10, 8,18 ; Private P. B. Holmes, scr, 16, 21, 37 ; Corporal Sim, scr, 16, 8, 24 ; Private Budden, 3, 15, 2, 20 ; Private Milligan 5, 10, 20, 35 ; Corporal Anderson S, 13, 10, 28 ; Private Ahier 5, 16, 2, 23; Quartermaster Sergeant Teddy, 5, 12, 4, 21 ; Prvt. Corlett 7,18,12, 37 ; Prvt. Rice 10, 13, 7, 27; Private Kirkham, 10, 14, I, 25 ; Corporal Anderson, 10, 2,4, 16; Private Medway, 12, .17, 5, 34; Private Bell, 12, 10, 9, 31 ; Private Cavenny, 12, 6,4, 22 ; Private Cullen, 15. 8,8, 31. A gold medal presented by Mr H. O. Death goes with the cup, and a pair of spurs presented by Mr W. M. Chappell goes to Private P. B. Holmes as runner-up. Lieut. Henderson in presenting the shield and cup, said the shooting of the shield winner was remarkably good. Sergeant-Major Coleman, W. 0., had told him it was the best he had known in a scouts’ competition. The winner had hit the man seven times, the horse twice and the target once, out of ten shots, scoring 40 out of a possible 50 points.
