CORRESPONDENCE.

I Our correspondents’ opinions are their own; the responsibility of editorial items makes sufficient ballast for the editor’s shoulders. It is necessary that all letters for publication should bear the name of the writer — not necessarily fo> publication, but as evidence of good faith.)

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In the last two issues of your paper there appeared a notice having reference to a social which is to be held in connection with the Presbyterian Church at Kihikihi this evening. The notice stated that the function would end with a dance, and as such a proceeding is not in accordance with Presbyterian custom and principle, many people were surprised and some considerably pained.- I wish to explain that the notice did not come from an official source. Neither Mr Stewart nor myself knew about it until we saw it in 'print, although the name of the former appeared at the foot. It had (as was subsequently ascertained) been . inserted, with a kindly desire to help, by a friend who expected, in view of what took place once before, that a dance would be the final detail in the evening’s programme. ,1 have since learned that a dance is likely to take place after the social. That, however, will be a matter of private arrangement, and is not to be regarded as having the imprimatur of the Presbyterian Church. I regret the necessity of having to write this, but to remain silent would leave the way open to misunderstanding, and perhaps misrepresentation, of the Presbyterian Church. Thanking you in anticipation for the privilege of making explanation through your paper,—l am, etc., ,

David J. a. Shaw, Moderator Kihikihi Presbyterian Church
