THE FARMERS’ CLUB.
[Contributed.] Oh 1 rub a dub dub We lairds want a club We lairds with the broad-sweep-ing acres; An up-to-date club On a one-guinea sub.— Subsidised by the butchers and
bakers. Being farmers you know, We must once again show Where there’s cream, ’tis our duty
to skim it — Hence the one-guinea sub. For a five-guinea club Fourpence ha’penny a week is our limit.
We poor struggling chaps Whose estates would fill maps, Can’t afford an extravagant pleasure ; So the mug, he can pay We’re the toffs, he’s the jay ; Fourpence ha’penny a week is
our measure. ’Twas a dem narrow squeak For ninepence a week Was proposed by a blithering
bounder: But you know, dam it all, That’s a terrible call, We could not survive it—we’d—
founder! So we’re out for a club On a one-guinea sub, A subsidised pauperised pleasure, Quarters free, day and night, Office, club, firing, light, For fourpence a week, what a
treasure ! Yes, fourpence a week, that’s our measure.
