CONCERT.

Those who were fortunate

enough to be present at the Town on Wednesday last were treated to a concert that would h#ve done credit to a much larger town than Te Awamutu. Although the weather was most unfavourable, there was a splendicf attendance. The stage had been . furnished as a drawing-room, and the manner in which the work was done and the effect produced, reflected the greatest credit on those responsible. The programme was opened with an •overture splendidly given by the orchestra, which included Miss V. Rickit (piano), Miss Jones and Mr E. Moeller (violins), Messrs Dil (cornet) and Bedford (cello). The quartette, by Miss Margaret McKenzie, Mrs Marr, and Messrs Parker and Oliphant, was greatly appreciated, and their re-appear-ance was demanded by the audience. Mr R. Ahier had to respond to an encore for his rendering of "Simon the Cellarer." Miss Shortridge (Auckland) was heard to advantage in/'Musica Pro Bita," accompanying herself

on the mandolin. She also had to respond, her encore number being "Marianina." She was equally successful in the duet \#fith Mr Calder, "Tripole Tripoli." They sang for an encore, "Tiritomba." "Tolstoi's Good-

bye " was another item sung by Miss Shortridge, which was well received. " She is Far from the Land," was the title of a song splendidly givenby MrE. Parker, who, in response to an encoresang "The Red Rose Bud." In the second half of the pro-

gramme he sang " The Raft." fMiss McKenzie was well received, fetng accompanied in her first song, "A Perfect Day," with a ' violin obligato, played by Mr E- . Moeller, the item being encored . ■. The latter also gave a violin solo very pleasingly. The comic song, "The Moeller Tra-la-la," was a fitting encore to the local- • J/sed melody, "The Steamer (Steamed Away," which was . given by Mr Rule; these items '' caused a deal of amusement, and ,:' further encore was demanded . Mr Calder's song, "There is a

}:;';, Land," was greatly appreciated, I• . and in response he gave "The M Wreath." A song and clog dance Wwas given by Miss R. Lang,

which had to be responded. The first part of the . programme was brought to a close by Mr Oliphant's rendering of "The Bandelerio," his encore number being " The Three Fishers." The second half of the programme was opened by an item from the orchestra, after which followed : " The Gleaners' Slumber Song," sung with expression by Miss Burk, who was recalled. Mr Calder (Auckland), who is the possessor of a fine bass voice sang " The Homeland," which was nicely rendered. Mr G. Galloway's best item was "The Skipper," being an encore to "The Storm Fiend." An item which was recalled was a mandolin solo, " Cavaliro Rusticano," nicely played by Miss Shortridge. The accompaniments were played by Mesdames Gibson and Henderson, and Miss , McKenzie. j

The Rev. F. W. Clarke thanked those present for their patronage, and also all those who had assisted in making such a success of the evening's entertainment. Special reference was made to the promoter, Mr J. Rule, to whom a large share of the. success of the concert was due. Thanks are also clue to Mr Dwen. They had listened to a programme that evening that would have clone credit to a city like Auckland. ,At the conclusion of the concert a dance was held, about forty couples taking part, and which was very enjoyable. Messrs A. C. Edwards and W. H. Johns were M.C.'s, the music being supplied by Mr G. Dalton. Supper, was . supplied by the ladies.
