FARMERS’ UNION.
PIRONGIA BRANCH. A meeting of the above branch New Zealand Farmers’ Union took place on Monday last, there being present: Messrs H. Death (chairman), J. T. Johnson, W. Beet, C. Given, W. Mahood, H. Boggis, and G. Finn. Letters were read from headquarters re experimental plots and other matters. Mr Death read a most interesting and instructive paper on noxious weeds. He divided them into three classes, “ absolute,” such as Californian thistle and poisonous plants ; “comparative,” weeds such as dandelion and ragwort; “ relative,” useless plants growing in other crops, such as Yorkshire fog, red top, etc. Mr Death strongly advised farmers to purchase the best seed on the market, as it was cheapest in the end.
Mr Johnson congratulated the president on his paper. In his opinion the same legislation should apply to seed merchants as regarded the purity of seeds as to the manure merchants. Mr Boggis also spoke, complimenting the president for his instructive paper.
Mr Johnson spoke re the Government’s decision to charge the users of telephones for the delivery of telegraphic messages. — The secretary was instructed to write to the Postmaster-General against the proposed charge.
