YOUNG MEN'S INSTITUTE.

On Tu sday evening a fair attendance assembled at the Town Hall, when readings were given by Messrs F. D. Wood and O. P. Owen. " The Life of General Gordon" wis the subject dealt with by Air Wood, which was listened to with great interest by those present. The speaker described General Gordon as a great soldier and humanitarian. In preferring a position of £2,000 a year to one of £IO,OOO showed that monetary gain was not his ambition.,, Illustrating an incident of Gordon's bravery, Mr Wood said the general never expected a man to do what he himself was not prepared to undertake. Besides being a soldier, he found time for philanthropic work.

Mr O. Price O.ven read Charles Dickens' " Christmas Carol." At the conclusion of the readings impromptu speeches were given by s.veral members oi the institute, the prizes b.ing awarded as follows:—W. Jcffcry I, Oliphant 2, G. M. A-chibald 3Dr Reekie announced that it was proposed to have a mock trial next Tuesday week, in which suffragettes would play a prominent part. Considering the benefits derived from attending these meetings it was surprising there were not more people present, as they afford a means not only of amusement but ais > of education, more so than any otner club in Te Awamutu.
