VALEDICTORY.
A most enjoyable and pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mr W. J. Thompson, Te Rahu, on Monday, when a number of friends of Mr A. Brown assembled to bid him farewell.
Mr Thompson, in whose employ Mr Brown has been for the past four years, said he had always found Mr Brown most trustworthy and reliable, and studied his employer’s interests as though they were his own. He wished him every prosperity in his new career, extending him a hearty welcome whenever he returned to the district.
Mr McVery presented Mr Brown, on behalf of his friends, with a case of pipes, and in doing so referred to the recipient’s willingness to'assist his neighbours.
Messrs Platt, Weal, and Costainealso spoke of the many good qualities of their departing guest and wishing him every success in the future.
Mr Brown, in returning thanks, said he had been taken by surprise. He assured those present that he fully appreciated their kindness, ije had endeavoured to do his duty, and he was glad to think his efforts had been recognised. He was sorry to leave his friends in Te Rahu, but circumstances compelled him to do so. He did not wish for a better employer, and hoped he would be as fortunate in the future.
During the evening songs were given by Messrs McCabe, Flay and Ahier.
