Stone, of Waikumete suffered dreadful injuries through being crushed against the division wall by the end of the next carriage. Having taken in. water, ' the goods train had passed over the points, and was close to the bridge. The driver states he had brought his train to a standstill close to the bridge, and was waiting to proceed with shunting operations. The fog being so thick he did not see the approaching train till she was on the bridge. He immediately got the train moving backwards, and immediately the approaching train crashed into them. It is stated that the Henderson train was a few minutes late, and that it approached the New Lynn station faster than usual. The signal itself was hidden from the train by the fog.
