TE AWAMUTU TOWN BOARD

; The regular monthly meeting i of the above Board was held in Bockett’s Buildings yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs A. S. Wallace (chairman), S. Mathews, W. Taylor, J. B. Teasdale, and Dr Reekie. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read. Meetings. It was decided that, until further notice, the Board’s meetings be held at 2.30 p.m. Road Line. It was pointed out that Mr G. H. White’s fence in Mahoe Street is six inches over the proper alignment, and it was resolved to write Mr White asking that the fence be shifted to the proper position. Grader Shed. The following tenders for the erection of a grader shed and j conveniences at the saleyards j were opened C. W. Rickit £57, T. Mclnnes £6O, Tail and Hutchings £7l 3s, W. J. Bickerstaff £137 10s. 'The lowest tender was accepted, the work to be completed within one month. Pipes. It was reported that the pipes had been put in, as authorised at the last meeting, near the bridge over the Mangapiko stream. Cemetery Site. The clerk’s actum in employing Mr F. Gibson to clear noxious weeds and rabbits at the cemetery site at a cost of 30s was approved. Waikato Court. Mr Teasdale reported having journeyed to Hamilton to attend the meeting to arrange for the representation of Waikato at the Auckland Exhibition. —Members expressed regret that this proposal was not being proceeded with, and the hope was expressed that some action would be taken by the more influential local bodies to make definite arrangements before all the available space is taken. Inward Correspondence.

From the New Zealand Railway Department, forwarding £3 18s, amount due for sanitary services.

Messrs T. Horton, Ltd., wrote with reference to trees for town beautifying.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd., wrote booking the Te Awamutu sale yards for special sales on June 2lst and July 17th. Messrs Reid, Bailey, and Towle notified that Mr Kirkham’s property had been purchased by the Education Board, and should accordingly be free of rates in future. The Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce wrote with reference to the installation of the clock at the Te Awamutu post office tower. The Defence Department wrote asking the Board to consider the charges for the hall, the account sent in being apparently at a higher rate than anticipated. —It was resolved to reply stating that the rate charged was as low as the Board could make it. The Te Awamutu Town Band wrote thanking the Board for supplying carbide for use at the band room.

Alexandra Street Widening

It was resolved that all owners of property fronting Alexanda Street between the Teasdale Settlement and the' Railway be warned that the Board contemplates taking half chain frontage to Alexandra Street, under the Public Works Act, and that no compensation will be allowed for any improvements effected after j the receipt of such notification, j Some discussion took place re- ! garding a motion to acquire the j property under the Public Works j Act without any further delay, but ! it was pointed out that as this ac- j quisition would necessitate a loan | proposal, and since already loans j aggregating £28,000 had been i authorised, and that as yet, not a j penny of that money could be j obtained, and in consequence, the j abeyance. Lighting. A letter was received from Mr ; J. W. Blackman with reference to the installation of a coal-gas plant at Te Awamutu. An account totalling £lB 10s being the fees for the preparation of a report was enclosed. A telegram from Mr Black, with reference tphis report on electricity waifreceived, stating that .The report would be forwarjkru this week. It was resolvecHtfsend a telegram to Mr Bltfck expressing the at not having received the report as prmnised for consideration at That meeting. It was resolved that a special meeting be held to consider lighting matters immediately the report of Mr Black is received. Separation from County. The Board’s solicitors (Messrs Swarbrick and Svvarbrick) forwarded the required documents necessary to complete the legal separation of the Town District from the County. The seal was duly affixed in the presence of members, and the documents signed by Messrs A. S. Wallace and Wm. Taylor.

Building Permit

The secretary of the LoyalTe Awamutu Lodge, 1.0.0.F.M.U., forwarded specifications of a proposed lodge room, and made application for the necessary building permit. —Resolved that

the writer be asked to submit

plans.

Hall Applications

The Auckland Baptist Union applied for the use of the Town Hall on Sundays. A scale of charges was drawn up as requested.

Telephone at Saleyards

The clerk reported havinginterviewed the managers of the auctioneering firms with reference 10 the installation of the telephone at the saleyards. The proposal was not entertained and the auctioneers declined to instal the telephone as requested. Crossings. It was resolved to procure two trucks of limestone screenings, and to put down several temporary crossings in Alexandra Street. Grader. The chairman reported that the road grader had been hired to the Kihikihi Town Board for a few days at a rental of £2 5s per day. A request. Mr H. A. Luks requested that permission be given for him to put in a gas pipe across Alexandra Street. —Refused, it being considered inadvisable to grant permission for a private pipe to cross any street. Road Works. The chairman and Mr j. B. Teasdale were deputed to arrange for the grading of Alexandra, College and Redoubt Streets where deemed to be necessary. Waterworks Loan. The clerk was instructed to make application for the first instalment of the waterworks loan of £lß,ooo. Redoubt Reserve. It was decided to make the necessary application to the Crown Lands office to have this reserve vested in the Board. Metal. The chairman was empowered to procure a sufficient supply of metal to keep the Town District roads in a good state of repair during the winter. Main Drains. The Clerk was instructed to make arrangements for the cleaning and repairing of several main drains. Balance Sheet. Ihe recently audited balance sheet for the year ending March 31st, was laid on the table prior to being sent forward to the Audit Department for approval. Town Hall. It was resolved to have the Town Hall site cleared of present overgrowth. The question of lighting was considered. It was resolved that Mr Crook —by whom the plant was installed —be asked to overhaul the plant and make it more satisfactory. The chairman and Mr Mathews to consult Mr Crook on the occasion of his visit. Accounts.
