MISSIONARY ADDRESS.
A fairly large audience was present at the Presbyterian "
Church la; t night to hear Dr John Kirk, who gave an address on mission work in China. The speaker took for his text Acts 1.8. He briefly referred to the work done in the Canton villages. Canton city, with a population of more than the whole of New Zealand, was the greatest heathen city in the world. It was not possible to do more than touch the fringe. It was erroneous to think the missionary’s task was to convert the Chinaman. No missionary ever born could do that. God needed man to perform a human task before He would perform a divine one. There were millions in China who never had the chance. The speaker referred to the method in which they endeavoured to preach the gospel, which was healing, teaching and preaching The great difficulty they had to face was superstition. China was saturated with it. This was principally due to ignorance. He gave instances where lives were sacrificed daily through this cause. The speaker spoke of the opposition which was met with in endeavouring to establish a hospital in Canton market, which had only accommodation for some 30 patients. At the conclusion of his address Dr Kirk was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, which was carried by acclamation.
