ST. JOHN’S ANGLICAN CHURCH.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. John’s Church was held in the supper room of the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. The vicar (Rev. F. W. Clarke) presided. There was a large number of parishioners present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, the latter showing receipts to be £312 7s 4d and expenditure £255 19s Bd.
The vicar referred to the ever readiness of the lay readers to come forward to help,in the work of the church. He hoped that..? others would follow .their good example, and so relieve those who had helped so willingly in the past.
It was proposed that the bal-ance-sheet be type-written and cireulated-in the outside centres.
Special reference was made to the improvement in the finances for the past year. Election of office-bearers resit.•ed : —Vicar’s warden, Mr R. A. Stevenson ; people’s warden, -Mr R. Fox : vestrymen, Messrs Miller, Bray, Rule, Turner, Crttickshank, Worthington, Luxford, Dwen, and J. Marshall; auditor, Mr D. Bockett (re-elected). The election of secretary and treasurer was left to the vestry to decide.
An earnest appeal was made for additional teachers in the Sunday school. It had been found necessary to promote scholars to take the position of teachers, but this was not considered satisfactory, it being thought advisable that the important work of teaching should be undertaken by adults.. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr White (choirmaster), Mrs Ahier (organist), and others who had assisted with the music during the vear; also to Mesdames _ Ahier and Malheson and Mr F. Turner for work done in connection with the church; and to the members of the ladies’ guild/ Scoutmaster Richards, Mr J. Rule, and the band of willing workers who had been engaged in painting and renovating the church, After the annual meeting an adjournment was made to the hall, where an excellent musical programme was given, the following taking part Songs, Miss M. McKenzie (encored) and Mr Bailey (encored); violin solo, Mr Moeller ; recitation, Mr Luxford; Highland dance, Miss Sutherland. Mrs (Dr) Henderson and Miss McKenzie played the accompaniments. At the close of the entertainment supper was provided by the ladies. The hall was then cleared for dancing, which was kept up till 11.30, and proved most enjoyable.
