N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION.
PATERANGI BRANCH. A meeting of the above branch was held in the hall on April 17. The president, Mr W. G. Macky, presided. There was a fair attendance of members present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. In reply to an application for the appointment of a J.P. for this district the Minister of Justice requested the branch to submit two names to the member for the district. The secretary was instructed to forward the names of Messrs C. S. McCallum Senr. and W. G. Macky.
The Minister of Railways, in reply to a request from the provincial secretary that tablet porters advise consignees upon arrival of goods, stated that he cannot give general authority for tablet porters to advise consignees, but if representations are made in regard to any particular station, and circumstances warrant it, telephone connection with the nearest post office will be provided. The secretary was instructed to send a strong protest to the Traffic Manager, as to the unsatisfactory manner in the delivery of goods at Ngaroto station. The consideration of country workers’ homes was deferred until next meeting. It was unanimously decided to support the Hairini branch in its efforts to get more attention paid to the graves of those who had fallen in the early wars.
Several remits were received to be forwarded to the Annual Conference. The following delegates were appointed to attend the conference : —Messrs W. G. Macky and li. Webb. It was decided to make another effort to get reform in our local postal service. The secretary was instructed to get a petition signed for- presentation to the Waipa County, urging' that body to open the road through Mr Taylor’s property.
