OTOROHANGA.

(Own Correspondent),

The residents of Otorohanga tendered a valedictory social to Mr and Mrs A. Furber and family, on 24th March, in Turner’s Hall. A strong committee consisting of Mesdames Worthington (hon. treas.j, Holden (hon. sec,), Morley, Henderson, Bell, Stewart, Forster, Whyte, Watkins, Taylor, Miss ICidson, and Messrs H. Clarke and Whyte,

worked uo a most successful function. About two hundred people turned out to show their friendship for the guests of the evening and a most enjoyable evening was spent, although everyone felt grief at the thought that such old friends would be missed from the local social gatherings in future. Songs were rendered by Mr C. John-

son, Miss L. Johnson, and Mr Pope, and were much appreciated. During the evening Mr C. Johnson, in a very apt speech made a presentation of a handsome silver tea service suit-

ably inscribed, to Mr and Mrs Furber. Mr J. Ormsby, another old resident of Otorohanga, in a few well-chosen words also bore

testimony to the esteem and affection in which Mr and Mrs Furber were held round the district. Mr Furber returned thanks in his usual breezy style, and all joined in singing “ For They are Jolly Good Fellows,” at the conclusion of which cheers were

given for the departing family. A very nice supper was provided by the ladies, and Mr Pope made an energetic and efficient M.C. at the dance which followed.
