NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' UNION.
PATERANGI BRANCH. A meeting of the above branch was held in the hall on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance of members, the president (Mr W. G. Macky) in the chair.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from the Postmaster-General through Mr J. A. Young, stating that the application of the branch for the raising of the status of the Paterangi post office to that of a money-order and savings bank would be given effect to at once. The secretary of the New Zealand Farmers' Union wrote inviting all those in need of farm labourers or domestic helps to at once supply particulars pf requirements, as the Government is at present considering the question of the immigration of this class of labour. Members all spoke of the need for something in this direction, but did not feel inclined to bind themselves in any way. Slaughtering Classes.
The secretary siiggested the establishment of slaughtering classes, and the keeping of a register of all willing to help in any way in the event of a strike affecting our exports. Members spoke strongly on this matter, and although it was considered impossible to keep a register, the tone of meeting left no doubt as to the action to be taken should the need arise. The secretary was asked to reply stating that this district will be prepared to give what help it can. Trading Association.
The secretary stated that he had made arrangements with Messrs House and Daking Ltd., of Te Awamutu to allow special privileges to members of the branch. By applying to the local secretary they will receive a book of coupons, this will entitle them to very substantial discounts.
The secretary was instructed to write to the manager of the Ruakura Experimental Farm and arrange for the members to visit the farm on Friday 14th inst., if that date was suitable. In this connection the secretary informs me he has received a wire favourable to the proposal, so that members should have a very profitable day's outing.
