Talk carnival

The Rev. W. Woollass will conduct service on Sunday next in the Presbyterian Church.

The official opening of the tennis courts and new pavilion will take place on Wednesday next at 3 p.m.

Another match of the bowling tournament v>as played yesterday, Messrs Brackenbridge and Wood defeating Mr White and Dr Henderson, the scores being 23—13

A general meeting of the trades picnic will be held in the Cosmopolitan club room on Tuesday, 17th inst., when the secretary will present tne balance-sheet of the last picnic.

The painting of the public library has been completed, and the building has now a very pleasing appearance. Considerable credit is due to Mr Amor for the excellent manner in which he has carried out the work.

The following will represent Te Awamutu in the tennis match against Pirongia at Pirongia tomorrow : Mrs Cruickshank, 'Misses Irvine, L. Collins, E. Jones, F. Me Donald, and B. Alexander, Messrs Johns, Cruickshank, Wilks Merrington, Edwards, Hogg, Innes Jones (2).

A report has recently gained currency that Mr Le Sqpur has disposed of his interest in the Cosmopolitan saloon. On inquiry we learn that this report is entirely without foundation, and we are assured that Mr Le Sueur has no intention of leaving Te Awamutu. Too often unauthentic reports are circulated, and in this connection Te Awamutu is no exception to the rule.

The sale of work got up by the ladies of the Presbyterian Church at Kihikihi will be opened to-day at 2.30 p.m., and will continue open this evening and to-morrow afternoon and evening. A very fine selection of goods is offered to buyers. The Xmas tree will be a special attraction for the children, and the competitions for the adults. The proceeds are in aid of the renovation -of the church at Kihikihi.

A most pleasing function took place jn the train while on the journey between Otorohanga and Te Awamutu on Thursday morning when the members of the Te Awamutu Philharmonic Society presented Mr and Mrs E. Moeller with a very handsome siLver tea service as a mark of esteem on the occasion of their marriage. Several congratulatory speeches were made, many members speaking of the valuable services rento the Society by both the recipients. In Mr Moeller the society realises that it has a most capable and painstaking conductor. Mr Moeller duly responded in fitting terms after which the members spontaneously struck up the refrain “For he’s a jolly good fellow.”

At a meeting of the Te Awamutu Town Band held recently it was resolved to hold a picnic on January 29th. When returning in the train from Otorohanga on Thursday morning the Philharmonic Society resolved to combine with the band in this proposal so that the combined picnic will take place on January 29th. The Philharmonic Society appointed Messrs Amor, Owen, Lenehan, Moeller and Warburton a committee to represent the Society in completing the arrangements. A ladies’ committee consisting of Mesdames Battson and Moeller, Misses Alexander (2), Mandeno, Cambridge, Jones, and Rickit was also ap T pointed. The combined committees of both institutions will meet at an early date, and a considerable amount of interest is already being taken in this picnic so that everything augurs well for a most successful gathering.
