POLO CLUB.

OPENING OF THE SEASON.

There was a very large attendance on the occasion of the opening of the above popular club which took place at the Green hill grounds on Wednesday afternoon. Visitors were present from Cambridge and Hamilton and other parts of the Waikato, and altogether a very enjoyable afternoon was spent, one and all expressing themselves as highly pleased with the sport displayed. Though the wind was somewhat boistarous the weather on the whole was very agreeable, brilliant sunshine prevailing throughout. Very appetising afternoon tea was provided in the intervals of watching the play, by the ladies, Who are to be congratulated on the successful management of this always important feature of an outdoor meeting. Players turned out in force, and about twenty members took part in the various matches, which continued throughout the afternoon. A mixed Te Awamutu team led off at about 2.30 p.m., and played one spell. Immediately after Ohaupo, represented by Messrs J. Graham, W. Taylor, Shaw, and F. Potts, played Te Awamutu A team, consisting of Messrs O. Kay, W. Kay, F. Taylor, and E. Potts. The match, which resulted in a win for Te Awamutu by one goal, was played in three spells, and provided a fine display of skill arid horsemanship. Several friendly games followed, being participated in by visitors from the out districts. Cambridge was represented by Messrs F. Reynolds and Meredith, the latter very kindly acting as referee. There was the usual large complement of ponies available—both old stagers and new chums. Some of the latter showed great promise, and though a bit raw at present will no doubt be in fine training when the time comes for the. provincial tournament, which will be held in Te Awamutu at Easter. That occasion is already being looked forward to.vand if the A team maintains its high reputation further laurels will no doubt be added to the club's already very extensive collection.
