GIRLS'S CLUB CONCERT.
There was a large attendance in the Town Hall on Wednesday night on the occasion of the first public concert given by the Girls' Club, and a very enjoyable time was passed by those present. The reception was a very cordial one, numerous encore:-, being demanded. The entertainment consisted of orchestral items, solos, duets, quartettes, violin solo, all by local talent, a very interesting demonstration of first aid, and an exhibition of physical drill and breathing exercises by the Club. The chair was taken by the Rev. F. W. Clarke, who, in a short address gave an account of the objects of the Club. He thought that the public should consider itself fortunate in being able to be present at a demonstration of the Girls' Club classes of physical culture, and also drew attention to the very great value of it, particularly in teaching girls to walk and not waddle. The great importance of first aid could not be exaggerated, and might be the means of preventing a great deal of suffering and perhaps even the saving of life. Very great credit was due to Dr Reekie, who was responsible for their training. Cases of severe cut.injured spine, fainting, broken arm, broken leg, broken jaw were then dealt with ; also the resuscitation of the apparently drowned and the construction -■ of an impromptu stretcher. Considerable skill was shown in dealing with these hypothetical cases, and the knowledge gained by the pupils will undoubtedly prove of the utmost value to them. A detachment of. the physical drill class, consisting of Misses C. Kirkham, F. Rickit, W. Stewart, M. Berry, I. Mcintosh, E. Hutt, R. Hutt, McGivern (2), Clement, L. Aider, and O. Middlebrook, gave a fine exhibition of physical culture, including the use of dumbbells. The same ladies appeared in an exhibition of breathing exercises at the conclusion of the programme. The hall lights were lowered, and the exercises gone througlv by limelight, > the appearance of the performers, dressed in white Grecian costume, being a very pleasing one. Both demonstrations showed that considerable painstaking work had been done, and Mrs Reekie, who was responsible for the training, is to be heartily congratulated on the successful efforts of her pupils. The following items were rendered : —Overture by Bedford family ; solos, Messrs Parker, McKinnon, Reekie, Jeffefy, Milroy ; duets, Dr Reekie and Miss Crawford, Dr Reekie and Mr McKinnon ; quartette, Mrs Andrew, Miss Rickit, Messrs Moeller and Galloway ; violin solo, Mr Moeller. Miss,Vera Rickit acted as pianist, and deserves great commendation for her excellent playing- -
