The time for closing the tenders for the cartage of cream for the Wharepuhanga district has been extended by the Waikato Co-op-erative Dairy Co. until 17th August.
Owing to the unfavourable weather on Saturday evening the Town Band did not “ discourse sweet music ” in the main thoroughfare, as intended. If weather permits the programme will be submitted to-morrow evening,
As an argument for doing away with some of the smaller local bodies, a member of a Southern road board stated it was mentioned at the conference .on the Local Government Bill that one local body with a revenue of per year paid its clerk £l4O. \
The following appeared in the report of the Auckland Hockey Association’s 'meeting iii last Wednesday’s Ijlerald Mr L. H. Norton was granted permission to take an Auckland team to Te Awamutu on August 23rd, and to Hamilton on August 24th, to play the local association teams.
The result of the hockey match between Te Awamutu and Otorohanga, played at Otorohanga last Wednesday, was a draw, each side scoring two goals — Bonnar and Robinson for Te Awamutu, and Phillips and Brindles for Otorohanga. The slippery condition of the ground made fast play very difficult, and the visiting team was much handicapped by the absence of a number of its players in Auckland. !
We are informed that Mr J. W. Warren (architect) has prepared plans for extensive alterations and additions to the Empire Cafe. When the work is completed the building will' be arranged so as to provide a ladies’ dining room apart from the then enlarged general dining room. A new shop front will be put in, and conveniences provided for the public, as well as modern facilities for the proprietor. It is understood the work will be proceeded with at once, so as to meet the increasing demand for accommodation.
Owing to the public meeting called for Monday night the usual Girls’ Club meeting’ wijJ not take place.
Divine service will be conducted in the Presbyterian churchnext Suudav both morning and evening by the Rev. W. Woollass.
The foundation stone’-lajing "V ceremony of the new PresbyterChurch will take place on Wednesday next. The stone will be laid by Mr J. Fisher, chairman of the Waipa County Council, and Mr J. H. Mandeno, one of the oldest members of the church. Afternoon tea will be provided by the ladies of the congregation and a collection will be taken up in aid ,> of the building fund of the newchurch. ,7
The following hockey players were selected from the local team to join the Cambridge representatives in the White Horse Cup competition in Auckland : Doqglas, Davis, Taylor, Parker, and Bonnar. Owing to the unavoidable retirement of the Piako representatives from the competition at the last moment, the contest lies between the Cambridge, Rotorua, and Rodney teams. The results of the first two matches were : Cambridge 4 Rotorua 2, Rodney 6 Cambridge 0.
