HOCKEY.
The opening of the season of the Te Awamutu Hockey Club took place on Wednesday afternoon at Mr Bockett's paddock. A fair number of both players and spectators were oresent. The seven-a-side tournament did not eventuate, on account of an insufficiency of members to pick three teams. Mr S. A. Empson (club captain) picked sides, two teams going on the field, and a fairly even game took place. A number of the players were new to the game, yet considering this and the fact that the season was only opening, the players showed good form, and, with a little practice, give every promise of developing into a good solid team.
The following players took part in the opening game:—A team —Dr. Reekie, W. Douglas, S. Bonnar, Ryder, Verner, C. Robinson, K. Wright, L. North. B team—E. Moeller, W. Bonnar, Verner, Johns, E. Jack, M. Solomon, Peterson, Davis and P. Silcock.
Mr S. A. Empson acted as referee to the entire satisfaction of. all.
After a well contested game the result ended in favour of the B team. The next practices are to be held next Wednesday."
The opening of the Te Awamutu Ladies' Hockey Club took place on V ednasday afternoon in the grounds adjoining the school. Tne attendance of. players was not too promising, but a practice match took place, when a lot of useful work was executed. A practice will take place next Wednesday afternoon.
