POLO.

PROVINCIAL CUP TOURNAMENT The Auckland Provincial Polo Tournament played at Epsom during the past week has been most successful. Last year the tournament was held at Cambridge, and the Te Awamutu team was successful in winning the Provincial Cup. In this year’s tournament there is every possibility that the Cup will again come to Te Awamutu, the final game between Te Awamutu and Remuera only remaining to be played. This year eight teams —Hamilton, Bay of Islands, Te Awamutu, Clevedon, Remuera, Cambridge, and Ohaupo—have met to decide the ownership of the trophy for the ensuing twelve months, and even if one were not keen on the game itself, the convincing ground is well worth,a visit to see the very fine collection of ponies the members have brought down. There are something like 150 ponies competing. Following are particulars of matches that have been played : CUP MATCHES. Hamilton A —T. Hunter, W. Hume (captain), C. Potts, and R, Dodd —beat Bay of Islands—A. Penny, A. 1. Close, D. McNicol (captain), and C. Schmidt—by 6 goals to nil. Te Awamutu —E. Potts, O. Kay, F. Taylor, W. Kay, (captain) —beat Clevedon —W. Duder, C. Atchison (captain), R. Atchison, and A. Bull —by 5 goals to I. The favourites for the cup had too much combination, but Clevedon played a good up-hill game, their vigorous-hitting skipper being as usual a tower of strength to the side. Cambridge A—Sexton, Banks, H. Crowther, Innes Taylor (captain), S. Meredith— beat Remuera B—H. Neal, G. Garlick (captain) J. Gorrie, and H. Dalton —12 goals to 2. Remuera A—A. S. Worsp, C. Crowther, H. Cotter (captain), W Dalton—beat Ohaupo—J. Graham, F. Potts, W. Taylor, (captain) and D. Kay —9 goals to 2.

SEMI-FINALS. _ Te Awamutu v. Hamilton—As was expected this match resulted in a win for Te Awamutu, the scores being to 4. The game was merry and fast. The first three spells were particularly warm. The scoring of the enp favourites was done by W. Kay (4), O. Kay (2), and Taylor, while Hunter, who played a faultless game, scored three of the Hamilton goals, the other being credited to Hume.

Remuera A v. Cambridge— Both these teams were out to win the privilege of meeting Te Awamutu in the final on Friday, and there was not a dull moment. The final scores were: Remuera 6, Cambridge 5.

HANDICAP MATCHES. The first teams to meet in the handicap events were Bay of islands (handicap 15 goals) and Te Awamutu B(handicap 9 goals). In the fourth spell J. Teasdale received a nasty fall, and as he was picking himself up he was knocked down by a pony, and his collar-bone dislocated. Te Awamutu notched a goal in the next spell, ape} Bay of Islands replied in the fourth spell with a couple; in the sixth each side scored. Te Awamutu evened up the §cqres ip [he lpst spell, the figures "(counting handicaps) being —Bay of Islands 18, Te Awamutu 12.

Cambridge (handicap 7%) and Ohaupo (10 X A). Play was fast throughout, Cambridge scoring 8 goals to Ohaupo’s 3. For Cambridge, Crowther, 1 Taylor, and Meredith, and for Ohaupo, Graham and Kay notched the goals.
