VALUABLE TEAM DROWNED.
On Sunday afternoon a valuable team of horses belonging to Mr Rothery, the successful tenderer for the Hauturu road, were drowned in the Waipa River. 1 he driver attempted to ford the river, which was abnormally high at the time; but before realising the danger, the waggon and team were floating in the current. The reins became entangled and chaos reigned. The driver managed to escape by means of some overhanging willows, but the waggon and team disappeared a few moments happened so quickly that although some spectators, who were only about ioo yards below the ford, arrived too late to give any assistance. It will be a very heavy loss, as the team was a valuable one. As soon as the river goes down to its usual level; no doubt the dray and harness will be recovered.
