WAIKATO HUNT CLUB.
The Waikato hounds met at Greenhill on August 9th. The weather was perfect, and from start to finish the hunt was a very enjoyable one. Punctually at 12 o’clock the hounds were cast off by the Deputy-Master (Mr Jefford), and after working round the hill from the homestead, found a strong hare on the racecourse grounds. A merry run back to the road followed, the hare going under the gate and away to a point where the streams meet. Being hard pressed she took to the water, but was overtaken, and under much converted brush and pads she was presented to those in at the kill. Another hare was found which made away over the polo ground, and after a run she escaped. The jumps were rather stiff, but there were very few spills. Several places were then drawn blank, and after a little while the company were pleased to hear the welcome cry of the hounds as
they broke away. The fastest run of the day followed over ground that the hunters started with, but the hare was lost at the foot of the hill. The scent was very quickly lost, and when once the pack were at fault it was almost impossible to pick it up again. The huntsmen now crossed the road to Mr Pollard’s property, and ■ when near the river Mr Jefford’s horse Bobstay, being like his master —a good old sport —plunged in and both had a ducking. The rider scrambled out, but Bobstay, evidently thinking the puss was on the other side, crossed over. Returning to his master he had to be pulled out with stirrup leathers buckled together. One well-known lady who is usually among the gallant first flight spent her afternoon busily with a camera. Would that she had been near when a gentleman stood on his head after negotiating a jump. Afternoon tea was provided by the Te Awamutu. ladies, who had asked for an opportunity of returning the hospitality extended to them by the Hunt Club. Accordingly, “ Greenhill ” was placed at their disposal by Mr and Mrs Wm. Taylor and full advantage was taken of the offer to carry the hunt to the highly successful issue.
No ladies followed the hounds, but we noticed the following ladies riding: —Misses K. McGovern, L. Collins, Campbell, Bertram, Spragg (2).
