OBITUARY.
Quite a gloom was cast over the~ciistrict on Saturday when it became known; that Mr Thos. Bond had, after a very trying illness, passedaway on the Friday evening, and it is . with sincere regret that we chronicle the loss of one of our oldest and most esteemed residents. The late Mr Bond was born in Adelaide in 1841. Ata very early " age he took part in the rush to the Victorian diggings, and for a number of years followed the occupation of digger on the Castemaine, Pyrenees, and Landsborough fields. In 1865 he left Australia to join his brother in New Zealand, where he arrived just after the Waikato war. He joined the Forest Ranges as a substitute and got his grant of land near Te Rahu. He then took up the occupation of farming which he followed till the time of his death. The late Mr Bond was a keen sport, and a great supporter of racing in the early days. His horses always ran to win, and it would be well it there were more men of his calibre connected with the turf at the present time. To his latest days he gave a hearty support to all healthy athletics, and cricket, football, and tennis had in him a good friend. Mr Bond was a member of the Rangiaohia Road Board for some years and for a time held the position of chairman. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
