THE NEW POST-OFFICE

PLANS IN COURSE OF PREPARATION. At the last meeting of the Chamber (if Comm'M’oc the secretary was instructed to make inquiries through Mr IL M. Christie, member for the district, as to progress in connection with Waipawa\s new post-office. Mr Adeane accordingly interviewed Mr Christie, who promised to see the Postmaster-General on the matter, also in reference to tin* Chamber’s desire that Waipawa should In* made a ledger olliee. At last night’s meeting of the Chamber the following telegram from Mr Christie was read: -“PostmasterGeneral states plans for new postoffice now in course of preparation. Position in regard to establishing of ledger office to lie investigated.” This is satsfactory so far as it goes Plans for the new office were prepared months ago. but apparent :\ they were a stock design, totally unsuited to the site at Waipawa, and had the building been erected in accordance with plan part of the structure would have been encroaching on tile railway line. Therefore, (he plan was withdrawn and on inquiries being made some time later the Chamber was informed that a fresh set was being prepared. That was some eon siderable time since, but it is pleasing to know that the matter lias not been altogether lost sight of . In regard to the matter of constituting Waipawa a ledger office the regulations require that there must he a certain number of accounts. Under the present conditions depositors wishing to withdraw money have to wait until the application is forwarded to Napier, and as time is verv often the essence of the contract the delay causes inconvenience. We understand that Waipawa is very close to the number required for a ledger office, and if the deficiency is the only stumbling block it could easily be made good by a little organising.
