POWER FOR BACKBLOCKS

TWO BOARD MEMBERS RESIGN. AS PROTEST AGAINST DELAY. As a sequel to the loss of a motion aiming to help the backblock settlers to secure electric power, Messrs A. W. S. Longley and M. Ryan stated their intention to resign from the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board at the monthly meeting on Friday. Mr Longley said that as he had been unable to do something for the people he represented, it was better that he should resign. With the exception of a few people in the Porangahau township, hardly anyone in an area valued at over £1,000,000 had the power. Nothing had been done for them. Mr A. C. Holms said that they had never been nearer their objective than to-day. It would be unfortunate if the Board did not have Mr Longley’s help, Mr M. Ryan, rising: “You can double that resignation. Through no fault of our own we can do nothing for the people we represent.” Expressing regrets at the attitude taken, Messrs J. A. Chambers and C. Pattison hoped that the two mem.bers would not put in their resignation).
