CENTRAL H.B. SUB-UNION
PORANGAHAU AND TAKAPAU DRAW.
Rugby was played under good weather conditions on Saturday. At Waipukurau the Porangahati team ran the leaders of the competition, Takapau, to a draw. Waipukurau had an easy win over Omakere, and Otane had no difficulty in accounting for Onga Onga, who were two men short. SENIORS. PORANGAHAU AX'D TAKAPAU DRAW. An exciting and fast-moving game was witnessed on Central Park, Waipukurau, when Takapau and Porangahau met for the second time this season. It was a close contest, and Takapau had to play their best to avert defeat, the match ending in a draw, eight points each. Takapau had the advantage in the first spell, tries being scored by R. Aldrich and Thomson, Halliday converting one. Shortly after the commencement of the second half Greens broke through and A. Kuru scored a nice try which Pahi converted. On resuming Porangahau continued to press, and although Takapau rallied for a time the Greens were in the ascedant. Takapau were penalised in front of their goal and Pahi placed the ball over the bar. Mr W. Phillips officiated as referee. OMAKERE DEFEATED. The Omakere team, who have shown a fine sporting spirit throughout the season in filling their engagements in spite of the distance they have to travel, put up a good defence to the strong Waipukurau combination, but the latter won by 22 (joints to 11. T. Ferguson scored three tries for Waipukurau, and M. Ferguson, Lovatt and Higgins one each, whilst Higgins converted two. Elgie and Worthington scored tries for Omakere, and T. Price converted one and kicked a penalty goal. Mr Colin Scott was in charge of the game. OTANE DEFEAT ONGA ONGA.
The Otane team journeyed to Onga Onga and registered a win by 20 points to nil. Neither team was at full strength, Onga Onga playing only thirteen men, whilst Otane had to press two old-timers into service. Tries were scored by Rust, Higgs, Smith, Osborne, and Green, and Smith converted one. The game was fast and open. Mr G. Robertson refereed. JUNIORS. Playing Porangahau at Waipukurau the Waipawa juniors suffered defeat by three points, the final score being 3—o. The Waipawa boys had hard luck in not scoring on several occasions. Old Boys beat Otane by three points to nil. WIN FOR HAWKE’S BAY. BIG MARGIN AGAINST MANAWATU. By beating Manawatu at McLean Park on Saturday by 26 points to nil, the Hawke’s Bay Rugby representatives registered their fifth successive win for the season. In these five matches Hawke’s Bay have scored a total of 175 points, and only 24 points have been scored against them. There was some disappointment that C. M. Le Quesne, the former Hastings and Hawke’s Bay captain, did not play for Manawatu; this, however, was impossible, as Le Quesne had not fulfilled the necessary residential qualifications at Palmerston North. Le Quesne travelled with the Manawatu team and saw the match from the bank. The fact that the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union lodged an objection against Le Quesne playing for Manawatu gave rise to some adverse comment.
