BOWLS

CHAMPION POURS SEMI-FINAL NAPIER WINS BY ONE POINT. The semi-final in the Champion Fours competition of the H.B. Bowling Centre between Waipawa and Napier (Bluff Hill having drawn the bye) was played ou the Waipawa green on Saturday afternoon, Napier, with the true sporting spirit, having offered to meet the Waipawa team on their own ground. Before the commencement of play, Eagle, skip of the local rink, thanked Engebretsen, skip of the Napier team, for his sporting gesture, which was greatly appreciated. Xn acknowledgment the Napier skip said the team were unanimous in the!; uecision to play the match at Waipawa, looking on the sporting aspect of the game rather than the fact that the championship was at stake.

The rinks were as follow: Napier.—Pirie, Kendall, Webley, Engebretsen. Waipawa.—Walker, Shackelford, Patterson, Eagle. The opening head was burnt, Eagle trailing the jack out of bounds. In the re-play Waipawa scored one, but after that Napier got to work and scored on four successive heads, collecting a two, two ones, and a three, the board reading 7—l. On the sixth end Waipawa secured a two, while Napier followed with two ones and a two on the next three hpads, the board on the ninth end reading 11 —3 in Napier’s favor. A three to Waipawa doubled their score, and then Napier collected a one, a two and another one, raising their total to 15 on the 13th head. Waipawa’s turn now came, and they registered a one, a two, a one, a two, a four and a one on the next six heads, putting them in the lead by two points on the 19th head, and raising the hopes of their supporters. However, on the 20th end Napier secured a two and evened scores. The final end was decidedly interesting. When the skips went, down Waipawa were lying one a foot in front of the jack. Engebretsen was a trifle narrow with his first and Eaglq did not Improve. With his second, however, Engebretsen drew a “purler” six inches behind kitty. Eagle drove with his last bowl but was too wide, crashing into front wood, which very nearly 7 displaced the lying shot. It was a keenly contested game right through, but Engebretsen deserved the victory on his last bowl. DILLON SHIELD COMPETITION. THIRD ROUND.
