Waipukurau Jockey Club.
Annual Meeting. The annual meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club attracted a large attendance on Easter Monday, although the weather was threatening and showers fell throughout the day. The rain, however, proved beneficial to the track. The machines put through the sum of £8515, which is an increase of £1491 over last year’s total, but £62 was then received for bookmakers’ fees. Hostilities began with the Maiden Plate, forwhich a field of eight faced the starter. Elfboat, the popular fancy, landed the stake. After rounding the bend, Ngakau and Lady Edna fell and the riders, P. O’Brien and J. Griffiths received severe shakings. Cork won the Hack Handicap from start to finish and Amato sprung a surprise by winning the Waipukurau Handicap. Altcar carried the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s colours to victory in the Two-year-old Handicap.
