Great Fire in Wellington.
[Per Pren Association.] WitutKOTOK, This day. The most extensive fire that has oocnrred in Wellington since 1887 broke out on Mount Victoria, at 2 o’clook this morning and destroyed virtually the whole of the residential block fronting Hawker, Shannon and Moeller streets, besides all but two or three houses on t he east side of Shannon street, and also isveral on the west side of Hawker street. Twenty-three houses in all were burnt, covering an area of between two and three acres. Amongst them are those of Hsssrs Devine (solicitor), Rowe (public librarian), Freyberg (timber expert), gev. F. Hales (Church of Christl, and Darroch (schoolmaster). Mr Rowe also lost his private library of 5500 volumes, rtlufd at £I3OO. The house of Mr Grundy (schoolmater), was the only one saved out of tbs main block, and this is in a ruined condition. The inmates of the houses lost practically everything. The buildings destroyed by the fire rare the residences of Messrs C. Moore, 0. Radcliffe, Andrews, J. Freyberg, T. (V. Rowe, R. Darroch, Captain Westrapp, Mrs H. Ross, Dix, Herbert, Dix, freeman, J. J. Devine, Hargraves, Collii, Petherick (2), N. Fraser, F. Cooper, G. Stadden, W. Dutch, B. Meyer, Hughes, Clifford, Rev. F. Hales and Gifford.
Total insurances £14,185, as follows: -Royal £2675, South British £I6OO, Commercial Union £ISOO, Phoenix £I4OO, New Zealand £I3OO, London and Globe £I2OO, Manchester £BBO, Alliance £750, Imperial £SOO, Victoria £4OO, Standard £3BO, National £l5O, North Qntenoland £l5O, Sun £IOO, Australian Alliance £SO. Latkk. The amended insurances total £15,860. Boysl £3500, Commercial Union £2IOO, frnsnix £I4BO, New Zealand £ISOO, Hanchester £9OO.
