(OWN CORRESPONDENT') Yesterday. A comparatively light criminal calendar awaits the Chief Justice for tbe ensuing Supreme Court sittings, which open next Tuesday. There are nine charges pro ferred against six prisoners, as follows : John Nelson, Hastings, wounding with intent to do bodily harm; Whiri Meihana, Wairoa, theft ; Georg© Henry Williams,
alias Wethers, Napier, two charges of forgery and uttering and two of false pretences ; Mary Anderson, Petane, concealment of birth ; Joseph Barry and Albert Kirby, Napier, breaking and enter ing. It is hoped to conclude the criminal business by Wednesday evening. An old Napier Bettler in the person of Mr T. K Newton passed away to night The deceas 'd gentleman, who was highly respected, came to Hawke’s Bay in 1852 and started business and was also engaged in paßtoral pursuits. He was at oue time a member of the Provincial Council. He had not enjoyed good health of late and his death was not nnexpected. He was in his 67th year and leaves a widow and ten children to monrn their loss. Mr H Hill is at present putting the scholars of the local district school through their facings. The attendance of late has been extremely good, and highly satisfactory results are expected at tbe examination. Mr R. Meredith, M.H.Et, for Ashley, yesterday paid a visit of inspection to the public schools. He was impressed with the orderly behaviour of the children and he complimented the head master and staff on the work of tbs scholars. Mr W. Bogle, who some time ago left for Western Australia to prospect in the interests of a Napier syndicate, returned home recently, bringing with him some fine specimens of gold-bearing ttone picked np on tbe Weetralian fields. Those samples seem to indicate that tbe Cool gardie boom is not a mere bubble, and Mr Bogle is confident as to the genuine ness of ihe fields, in spite of the publisl el opinion of the expert who was sent specially to report for the Victorian nnd New South Wales papers. In fact, Mr Bogle id so well satisfied with the prospect that be intends to return to Western Australia next week. Messrs C. H. Cranby, R Black, and H. P. Cohen wore yesterday re-elected to the vacancies in the Municipal Council. Tbe officers of the local branch of the post and telegraph service to-night abandoned for the nonce all worry and care attendant on the discharge of tbeir public duties, and gave themselves up to the pleasures of dancing, the occasion being tho annual reunion. There was a largo and representative attendance and the function passed off most successfully
