KAIKORA.

The Kaikora School Committee held their ordinary monthly meeting in the Mechanics’ Institute on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs Gray (chair), Merrylees, Clark, Mundell, Ingleton, aod Sutherland (secretary). After the minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, the following correspondence was dealt with : —Letter from Miss Arrow, thanking the Committee for the testimonial she received from them. Received.—From Miss Maggie Gray, applying for appointment as trainee. Resolved that Miss Maggie Gray be appointed trainee, as recommended by the headmaster.—The headmaster’s report was read, showing that the attendance was 93-2 for the week that the school had been opened.—lt was decided that the next meeting of the Committee be held on
the 26th February.—Messrs Clark and Merrylees were appointed visiting committee for the month, and accounts amounting to £3 17s 6d were passed for payment.
The annual meeting of subscribers to the Mechanics’ Institute was held the same evening. Present—C. Clark (chair), Dodds, Merrylees, Symons, Sutherland, Mundell, and Gray (secretary). After the minutes of the last meeting were read
and confirmed, the treasurer (Mr Merrylees) road a statement of receipts and expenditure for the past year, which showed a credit balance at present of £9 13s 9d, and stated that the amount owing to the Institute by subscribers and rents from local bodies would bring the balance up to about £2o.—After some discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Mr Dodds, seconded by Mr Symans, that £lO be paid off the debt on the building, and that the committee be empowered to spend a sum not exceeding £5 on new books.—The
following officers were elected for the ensuing year President, Mr Charles Clark ; Treasnrer, Mr John Merrylees ; Secretary, Mr E. Gray ; Committee— Messrs Venn, Dodds, Symans, Pettit, and Sabin.—lt was resolved that a vote of thanks be accorded the proprietors of the Waipawa Mail, Hawke's Bay Herald , Daily Telegraph, and Evening News for gratuitously supplying the Institute with papers for the past year.—The following gentlemen were appointed a sub-com-
mittee to purchase the books authorised above : —Messrs Dodds, Symans, and Gray.— A vote of thanks was accorded the treasurer on the motion of Mr Dodd3, seconded by Mr Clark, for the highlysatisfactory manner in which he had carried out the duties of the office for several years.—The following accounts werejlpassed for payment :—J. M, Crerar, £1 8s 6d ; Librarian, £2. A young man, whose name I have not been able to ascertain, came in yesterday morning from Mr McHardy’s station, Blackhead, having had .his collarbone broken. He went on to the County Hospital by yesterday morning’s train, to be attended to by the hospital surgeon.
