The Waipawa Mail. Published Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Saturdays. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1892.

For the three seats on the Education Board, vacated by the retirement of the Hon. J. D. Ormond, Oapt. Russell, and Mr H. Baker, there are six nominations. There should be no doubt of the re-election of Mr Ormond and Capt. Russell. They have always taken a deep interest in the work of education, and are acquainted with all its details. Mr Dillon is the only other candidate who has a claim on the country committees, and we hope that he will take Mr Baker’s place. Mr Cohen has acted on other local public bodies in Napier, hut he cannot be expected to study the wants of the country districts. The same objection applies to Mr Edwards and Mr Gilberd. Both gentlemen are town residents, and have but little acquaintance with the country districts. Mr Baker’s retirement is very much to be regretted. He ,had visited nearly every school in this wide education district, and could therefore form a trustworthy opinion as to the reasonableness or otherwise of the continual applications which the Board receives for special grants. Unless guided by such knowledge, the members must rely absolutely on the advice 8» their officers.

A petition has been put in circulation u *gi°g the construction of the WoodvilleEketahnna line from tbe Woodville end. Copies of the petition have been sent to Maugatainoko for signature. Some of the settlers in the Manchester block are suffering greatly from the want of water for their stock, one farmer on Kids’ line sinking as deep as 90ft without meeting a sign of encouragement. The Premier absolutely contradicts the statement that His Excellency the Governor has promised Ministers to make 15 appointments to the Legislative Council before leaving the Colony. The Government have awarded the sufferers in the recent gunnery disaster off : £175 to one fisherman for loss of boat and time, and £225 to the two others (who were partners) for the same losses. The widow of the man Hisbent, drowned by the sinking of one of the boats, has been granted a pension of 7s per week, besides allowances for her children.

Representatives of the press were excluded fjom tbe meeting held on Monday night for the formation of a Wellington Liberal Association, but were informed that a Provisional Committee was formed to draw up rules and regulations, and after they have reported to a subsequent meeting, permanent officers will be elected.— Times . We understand that the railwaj 7 revenue for the past month exhibits such an increase upon the revenue for preceding months that whereas at the end of the year there was a deficit of £20,000 on the Commissioners’ estimates, this deficit has now been reduced to about £7ooo.— Times.

The adjourned meeting of the Waipawa Building Society took place last Tuesday eveniug. There was a fair attendance of members, and the amendments to the rules, as suggested by the Revising Committee, were adopted unanimously. Several, othei minor alterations not included in the printed list of amendments were also agreed to. At a meeting of the Tamumu Road Board held on Saturday (January 30th), Messrs J. M. Brown (chairman), G. C. Williams, W. Busby, and A. Logan being present, the following tenders were received and dealt with :—I2OO yards of metal at Big Hill :—T. Butler, 12s per yard ; H. Hickey, lls (accepted). 300 yards of metal at Pourere : T. Butler, 9s per yard ; J. Ford, 8s (accepted). 900 yards of metal at Puri Puri : E. Clark, 5s 9d per yard ; T. Butler, 4a 8d ; A. Wheeler, 4s 7d (accepted). An effort is being made in Church circles in Wellington to secure a visit from the Gr- C. Grubb, a Church of England raissioner, who is now in Sydney, where he has been attracting enormous audiences at the Centennial Hall. On three evenings there was an average attendance of about 3500, and on the last evening fully 4000. A feature of the meeting was the presence of numbers of clergymen of various denominations. One hundred pounds was paid for the use of the hall, and was subscribed almost immediately. Among other donations, the sum of £BB was received from a workingman.— Times.

According to the report in Galignani’s Messenger, the Chrysanthemum Show held in Paris on November 19 was extremely interesting. The principal exhibits came from the north and south of France, and were widely dissimilar. Those of the north were remarkable for their size, some of them being Bin in diameter, or as large as an ordinary sunflower, whilst those from the south were moßtly small varieties, and were noticeable 4'or curious combinations of delicate colours and eccentric shapes. Perhaps one of the most beautiful had a golden heart fringed with gold. The Titan is more like a ball of oatrioh feathers than a flower, and is exceedingly lovely. In contrast to this might have been seen some varieties hardly larger than Immortelles.
