[Per United Press Association.] DARING ROBBERY. Wellington, May 27. A daring jewel robbery was perpetrated some time last night or early this morning, at the shop of Mr Jenness, jeweller. The robbers effected au entrance at the back of the building by cutting out the panel of the door aud then turning the key. They had with them a locally manufactured lantern, which hail been arranged so as to be darkened. They took 26 gold watches, 40 silver watches, 20 solid gold alberts, 40 to 45 gold necklets, 24 silver uecklets, 12 ladies’ silver alberts, 6 dozen silver rings and gold brooches, 4 pairs diamond earrings, 24 gold brooches and earrings, including 5 diamond sets valued from £3 to £35, and 12 gold and diamond scarf pins. The total loss is estimated at between £ISOO and £2OOO. N. 3 WALES CONTINGENT Colonel llaultain will shortly proceed to Sidney ou behalf of New Zealand to congratulate the New South Wales contingent on their return from the Soudan. GOVERNMENT MEASURES. Among the measures to be introduced during the session by the Government are the Conservation of Forests Bill and a bill to consolidate the Trustees Acts. THE FISHERIES QUESTION. May! 27. Amongst the bills to be brought in by the Government next session, is one dealing with the Fisheries question. COLONIAL INSURANCE CO. A private meeting of shareholders in the Colouial Insurance Company, was held last eveuiug, but Press reporters were not admitted. It is, however, understood that a discussion took place relative to the management of the Company’s business by the Board of Directors, and that in accordance with a resolution which was unanimously passed, steps will at once be taken to call an Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholder, for the purpose of discussing the question of management. About 20 shareholders were present.
UNRULY VOLUNTEERS
Two of the Volunteers who fired their rifles in the train on Monday last, have been placed under arrest by order of the Adjutant, as they are non-commissioned officers. SEIZURE BY DETECTIVES This afternoon a detective made a raid on a tobacconist’s shop in Willis Street, aud seized a number of articles which are alleged as being used on the principal of a totalisator, and that the investments were on the Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdle Race at Christchurch, Among the articles seized were two large sheets of cardboard, on which were written the name of the race, and horses engaged in it ; while under the name of the racehorses were a number of investors ou that particular horse, the total number of investors on each race being at the top of the sheet. India-rubber stamps and a number of tickets beaiiug horses names, aud about
£SO in cheques and notes were also taken possession of. The names of all tho persons in the shop were lakcn down, and it is understood that the police will lay an information under the Gaming aud lotteries Act against Mr Mandcll, who occupies the premises.
