Postponed. —The concert advertised to take place at Kaikora on 21st inst.. has been postponed till the 28th, so as not to clash with the entertainment to be held at Waipawa on Friday next in aid of the Waipawa Methodist Church harmonium fund.

Waipukurau District School.— We understand that Mr Smith, M.H.R., has purchased a fine lot of books, which, with his usual open-handed generosity, he intends to present to the children attending the Waipukurau school on the 21st. No doubt the juveniles will fully appreciate his kindness. Death. Another “ old identity” has passed away. Mr John Smith, better known as “ Navvy Jack,” who was a resident of this district for over 25 years, died yesterday at the Napier Hospital. Deceased had been suffering for some time past from an inward complaint, and on Monday, at his request, Mr T. Cowper took him to the hospital, but he expired within a couple of days of entering that institution.

A Wail from Woodville. —The Woodville paper of 12th inst., in a subleader, utters a lamentation that that journal reflects such a poor appearance when compared with the Mail. The Examiner appears to be suffering from an acute attack of Waipawa Mail. In an article headed “An Ishmaelite,” it states that “ the Waipawa Mail’s ‘ own correspondent* has commented on the action of the Woodville ratepayers in agitating for separation from the Waipawa County,” &c. We are not aware that “ oar own” or any other correspondent of ours has done anything of the sort. The comments alluded to appeared in a Napier contemporary. But we suppose mistakes like these will always happen to the Woodville paper so long as "it is edited twenty miles from where it is partly printed and published. Masonic.—The installation of W.M. and investiture of officers of the Abercorn Lodge, E.C., took place on Wednesday evening at the Masonio Hall, Waipawa. Over 50 brethren were present. After lodge business was concluded, the brethren sat down to a banquet. The usual lodge and other toasts were proposed and duly honored ; and on the wiiolo a very enjoyable evening was spent.

A Rise. —Mr W. H. It was proposed to include him in the Ministry, but his colleagues would have none of him. A Translator Required. —A firm of. booksellers in Dunedin recently received a circular from a Germau correspondent, of which the following is a copy verbatim et literatim. It is a good specimen of .what can be effected by a careful translation, and a volume by such a translator would bo amusing if not in structive : —“Sire!—l permit me to demander by you, if you like, to ecliange white me, of postal stamps envelopes and Postal Cards used and unused. I beg you to say me, whate you coults want of this stamps and send me your Manco Liste. White this letter j send you my MancoListe, attend yours replay and signe whis much salutions, —Yours truly.” Robust and blooming health in Hop Bitters, and no family can afford to be without them. Appearance Everything. Tho delegates sent by New Zealand to the Conference, says the Melbourne Herald, arc evidently impressed with the importance of the occasion, for they are attended by a staff of no less than three—the son of Major Atkinson, who acts as the Premier’s private secretory, Mr Fox, who is styled secretary to Premier, and Mr Maunsell, whoso title is secretary to the Government of Wellington.

Journalistic Pleasantries. The editors of the Palmerston papers are conducting a controversy by means of letters published in their own journals, with their own names attached. He of the Times thus apostrophises him of the Standard :—“ Let me say in conclusion that time after time I have pitied yon that a man of your energy and ability should have so misdirected it as to become the sour and misanthropic individual yoa are, a journalistic Ishmaol.

A Chloroforming Thief. A Nebraska thief devotes his time entirely to the larceny of hogs, and with great success. He goes forth by night armed with a long stick, to which a sponge is fastened and a bottle of chloroform. The porcine victim is lulled to rest by the anaesthetic, and then borne silently away. Tho other night one of the slumbering hogs rolled out of tho thief’s waggon. A kind-hearted farmer who came along the road helped the thief to load up again, ainid profuse thanks.
