WAINUI .
(FROM our own correspondent.) December 11. The weather is the all-absorbing theme down here just now, and well it might be, as more unseasonable weather than that we have experienced lately can scarcely be conceived. It has been wet, cold, and stormy, with only an occasional gleam of sunshine. Shearing operations are much retarded in consequence, and both the sheepfarmers and the shearers are beginning to complain. In local works we are making good progress. The bridge contractor, Mr McLeod, is about starting operations. Tho recent stormy weather has rendered our anything but macadamised roads impracticable for the hauling of the timber for the structure. The much-talked-about rabbit fence, which is to render Hawke’s Bay impervious to the incursions of “ bunny,” is surveyed for a distance of twelve miles in the Woodville direction, and tenders have been invited for clearing the first section.
The approaching local Caledonian sports to be hold on the Ist January, are looked forward to with great interest by our local athletes and tho juvenile community. Judging from the preparations already made, I have no hesitation in saying that we anticipate good sports. At a public meeting held at the Bush Inn, Wainui, last Saturday, the following officers were appointed :—Mr Charles Herbert, president ; Mr 11, Pillans, secretary ; Mr Cameron, judge ; and Mr G. Speedy, treasurer. I think, on the whole, that the meeting made a good selection. A handsome subscription list amply testifies to the esteem in which sports in general and athletics in particular are held by our citizens, and the excellent prize list should also act as a stimulus to induce competitors from other places to visit us. The day’s programme is to consist of running, jumping, vaulting, <fcc., but for other particulars I must refer the reader to tne advertisement shortly to be published. The day’s sport is to be wound up by a ball in the evening, to which all the votaries of Terpsichore are invited to be present.
