[From United Press Association.] Auckland, December I. The direct steamer Triumph ran ashore on the Tiritiri rocks last night. 1 Licember 3. The steamers Waitaki, Glcnelg. lona, and Argyle made a united effort to tow

the Triumph off the reef yesterday morning, but after an hour’s trial it had to be abandoned as unsuccessful. The captain says the pilot told him to give the island a wide berth, but he stood up to the light for the purpose of making a straight course thence to Cape Colville, but unfortunately he kept too close in. They saw the light all the time, and knew it was Tiri, but did not think he was so close in. When the look-out man gave the alarm land was only 150 yards distant ; he then gave the order full speed astern, and kept the engines going all night, but without moving the vessel. The captain of the Triumph has his boats slung out with life-buoys in them, in order to provide for eventualities in case of a sudden change of wind. The steamer Argyle remains in attendance. At a conference of engineers this afternoon, for the purpose of considering the possibility or otherwise of lifting the Triumph off the rocks into deep water by the agency of compressed air, it was generally agreed that the project was feasible, and eventually a proposition was adopted and submitted to the agents of the vessel, Messrs Nathan and Co., but the terms have not transpired. The captain of the Bengal considers the Iriumph may be got off with proper appliances. He says she is not in so bad a position as the Sorato was at Adelaide. Wellington, December 2.

The 24 hours’ walking contest between Scott and Edwards was concluded at 10 o’clock last night, Edwards being declared the winner by one lap (80 yards). At 8.30 p.m. Scott was ahead by half a mile, but Edwards, by successive spurts gradually overhauled him, and won by a lap, the distances being—Edwards, 110 miles 16 laps ; Scott 110 miles 15 laps. December 3. The City of Sydney, with the English November mails, left ’Frisco on the 29th for Auckland, four days late. The City of New York, with the November colonial mails, arrived at ’Frisco from Auckland on the 28th, one day late. Dunedin, December 3. At an inquest on the body of a man named James Young, who shot himself, a verdict of suicide while insane was returned. The deed was evidently premeditated. The deceased left a letter explaining about the owners of articles of jewellery left in bis shop for repair, and also a letter addressed to the reporter of the Otago Daily Times, saying he did the deed all through love, and that his friends were to be blamed. The explosion at the Oamara powder mills on Thursday did about £2OO worth of damage. The whole building was demolished, and some of the lighter machinery damaged. The explosion is attributed to a fire which was started near the mill by men engaged in bush felling.
