Why Pork is Not Sold in Cambridge

“WOULD BE MAKING A LOSS 1 ’ THE BUTCHERS UNANIMOUS For some time the butchers of Cambridge, in line with other parts of the Waikato, have cut out the sale of pork, owing to it being uneconomic. There have been very few complaints, but last week “The Waikato Independent” received an inquiry from a woman who wanted to knowywhy pork was unobtainable in Camtj/idge, when it could be bought in Auckland. On making investigations, the same opinion was expressed Joy all butchers seen. With the jiric/6 of pork fixed at 1/Oi by the Tribunal, it' can be sold only at a W. Into the shop, the price of pork averaged 1/1, said one butcher, and there was a good deal of that which could not be sold. Another butcher stated that there was no price limitation on cooked pork, and some Auckland butchers sold it in this way. If they sold uncooked pork over the counter, they were either making a loss, or else the price to the housewife was higher than it should be.

“We are not encouraged to sell pork, because as much as possible is required for shipment over seas,” said a butcher. “In view of that, the Cambridge butchers decided that it was better for everyone if they did not sell pork at all.” It was mentioned that when the restrictions on pork had been lifted, some butchers, including those in Te Awamutu, did not then commence selling it. Referring to meat generally, one butcher told an “Independent” representative ,candidly, that he had never seen a country town where the standard of butchers’ shops was as good as in Cambridge. He said he was not speaking for his own shop, but the others. There was very little cause for complaint at any of the shops, all of which sold “red stripe meat.”

To an it was learned that some meat from Cambridge was supplied to Mangakino, but this had no effect on the local market.
