ALMOST £12,000,000 OVERALL AUTHORISATION I Until August 31 last the total overall authorisation for rehabilitation purposes amounted to £11,952,847, says a statement from the Rehabilitation Department. By far the most of thjs, £10,386,548, was for loans for farms, houses, businesses, furniture and tools of trade. The remainder was for the cost of various forms of training and education and for special grants and allowances. The amount authorised for the Board's trade training centres as at August 31 was £489,992, while for other forms of trade training the total was £285,754. This included subsidies to private firms emploving ex-servicemen under the Board's training schemes. The amount involved for farm training was £72,221, education £117,391 (both of these from April, 1944) for blinded exservicemen £10,281, and grants to the Disabled Servicemen's Re-estab-lishment League £52,000. The amount so far expended on rehabilitation allowance is £510,900. These are intended to cover the time between discharge from the services and the resumption of employment and are not paid for more than 13 weeks. Special grants totalled. £12,775 until the end of August, while grants for travelling expenses and removals amounted to £7956. Included in the total is £153,680 being financial assistance authorised to Maori ex-servicemen. There is also a further £2,814,002 authorised for the purchase and development by the Crown of lands for the settlement of ex-servicemen farmers.
