KARAPIRO WORKERS

HIGHEST IN DOMINION EMPLOYED ON PUBLIC WORKS In the Monthly Abstracts of Statistics issued for the month of August an item which is of particular interest to Cambridge is the number of men employed on public works in New Zealand. The average number of men employed on roads, hydroelectric works and other works during the month of July, 1945, are as follows: Roads (including Main Highways): Whangarei, 258; Auckland 166; Hamilton, 106; Taumarunui, 178; Tauranga, 294; Gisborne, 105; Napier, 216; Wanganui, 219; Wellington, 369; Nelson, 138; Greymouth, 366; Christchurch, 162; Dunedin, 313; a total of 2,890.

Hydro-electric works: Auckland, 131; Hamilton, 369; Karapiro, 1,187; Napier, 504; Palmerston North, 132; Nelson, 94; Christchurch, 461; Invercargill, 122; a total of 3,000. Since these figures were compiled a numof men from Karapiro have been transferred to Maraitai.

Other works: Land improvement, drainage, and irrigation, 530; housing construction, 202; public buildings 521; aerodromes, 181; railways, 464; ether works, 2,403. Making a grand total of 10,191 for the month of July, 1945.
